Thank you so much for all you are doing to support loving families in our community! We have been blessed with two amazing boys, the youngest through adoption, and are very thankful for the financial assistance we received from Love Has Come. It was perfectly timed, as our baby Elias came during a time filled with many stressful transitions and financial uncertainty.
After meeting in college, three years of friendship, and a year and a half of dating, we were married in April of 2001. We went on to complete graduate degrees in Vancouver, British Columbia and Washington State. Since then we have lived in Montana where Courtney works as a pastor, and Alec worked first as a teacher and now as a director of youth and family ministry.
In July of 2008, we welcomed our son, Ezra, into our family. We planned to have more children, but Alec’s diagnosis with an inherited gene mutation in February, 2011, changed our plans. The mutation doesn’t have a significant health impact on males, but causes devastatingly high rates of cancer in young women. After watching the women in Alec’s extended family battle against cancer, we decided we did not want to risk passing along this gene to another generation. In April, 2011, we began the adventure of expanding our family through adoption.
Elias was born in December, 2013. Two days after first learning that we were matched with a baby-on-the-way, we received a 4am text message with a photo of our new son. We woke Ezra up to a picture of his new little brother. Ezra yelled, “I didn’t know I was getting a baby brother today!” followed by an excited scream. We piled in the car and made our way to meet little brother.
The time of waiting involved in our adoption was hard. It tested our patience, and our hope, and our faith. Ezra’s consistent longing to be a big brother was both beautiful and heart-wrenching. We were certainly fortunate to have Ezra’s love throughout that time. The extra joy and love that Elias has brought to our family has not erased the pain of the waiting years, but they were certainly worth it. It wouldn’t take you much time with our two amazing children to understand why.
The support of Love Has Come and the Forever Family Fund Grant was very important to us. It helped us to know that we were not alone in a time of major transition, sleep deprivation, financial strain, and all manner of stress. It helped us to focus on the amazing little person who joined our family and who needed all the love and attention we could muster.
So once again, thank you to all of you for supporting Love Has Come, and for supporting our family!
With deep thanks,
Alec, Courtney, Ezra, and Elias
